Microneedling

Is this treatment for me?

Microneedling is used to promote the skin’s production of collagen and elastin. Collagen is what gives our skin plumpness and bounce and our collagen levels begin to decline from the age of 20. While this is a brilliant treatment for rejuvenation, microneedling can also help to treat:

Fine lines
Scarring – pigmented, acne and surgical scars
Pigmentation and melasma
Acne
Large pores
Stretch marks
Sun damage

Ok, so how does it work?

Microneedling causes a controlled skin injury, kickstarting the body’s natural wound healing response. It involves the use of sterile micro needles to create multiple micro channels/wounds. Each micro channel encourages the body’s own wound healing response, which in turn encourages skin cell renewal as well as new blood capillary formation. This stimulates the skin’s own production of collagen and elastin, which deteriorates as we age.

Microneedling is also used as a delivery method of products beneath the skin, through the micro channels created. I’ll use a tailored cocktail of nutrients to improve the ecosystem beneath the skin’s surface, as part of your treatment.

Why is microneedling good for my skin?

It’s easiest to map out the body’s wound healing response:

.01

Inflammatory phase

1 to 7 days following treatment

The body clears the damaged area of dead and damaged tissue

Amino acids, vitamins and nutrients are sent to the damaged area

.02

Proliferation (regenerative)

2 days to 4 weeks following treatment

The body produces more keratinocytes (skin cells) and fibroblasts (cells that produce collagen and elastin)

The body forms type III collagen and elastin

New blood vessels bring more blood flow to the treated area bringing with it an increase in oxygen and nutrients

.03

Maturation (remodelling)

2 weeks to 6 months post treatment

Skin tissue is more organised

The new collagen in the skin converts from type III to type I (type I collagen: minimizes fine lines and wrinkles and improves skin elasticity and hydration)

The combination of increased elastin and collagen is what helps give skin a youthful appearance. Microneedling also thickens the epidermis (the top layer of the skin) which thins as we age.

The rejuvenating effects of microneedling are undeniable, leaving the skin looking radiant, with results continuing to improve over the coming months.

Frequently asked questions

What can I expect during my treatment?

I’ll gently run a pen over the surface of the skin which has 9 micro needles in the tip. I’ll also apply a serum of enzymes and nutrients to help the pen glide over the are being treated. This will also penetrate the skin, nourishing the cells below. You may feel a light scratching feeling or a more intense scratching, depending on the condition being treated and therefore the needle depth.

How will my skin look following treatment?

Your skin may feel a little warm and may look a little pink following your treatment, this will go down within a few hours. For corrective scar and stretch mark treatments, redness will last a little longer. Microneedling causes minimal visible damage to the skin, so little to no downtime.

Will taking a collagen supplement do the same thing?

Unfortunately, no. The only way to increase collagen in your skin is to encourage the skin to produce it itself. Studies do show that vitamin C, taken orally, does, however, have a long-term cumulative effect on the functionality of our fibroblasts, which are responsible for producing collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid.

How many treatments do I need?

A course of 3 treatments is recommended spaced at 2 weeks apart. Followed by a review.

For more targeted treatments such as scarring, this may vary.

Who is not suitable for microneedling treatment?

Microneedling is not suitable for those who:

Are pregnant or breastfeeding
Are undergoing cancer treatment
Suffer with a blood coagulability disorder
Suffer with an autoimmune disorder
Have a nickel or stainless steel allergy
Suffer with keloid scarring
Suffer with cystic acne
Have taken medication with the ingredient Isotretinoin, such as Accutane, in the last 6 months

If you are unsure if you are suitable for microneedling, please get in touch and I will be happy to help.
